The National Nuclear Laboratory will be hosting the Disabled Scouts Association, building rockets powered only by water and air! The equipment is provided by the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL).

This is a talk given by Dr Malcolm McDonald, the associate director of the Advanced Space Concepts Laboratory, University of Strathclyde. The talk will focus on the way forward for space exploration and the challenges we will face in the next 30-40 years in exploring space. Refreshments will be served.
Nuclear Decommissioning Using High Powered Lasers - 30th June 2011
Lasers are well suited to remote deployment due to the lack of reaction force, small process head and limited fume generation. Until recently industrial lasers were regarded as too unreliable for use in nuclear decommissioning environments and so their usage has been limited. The advent of solid state "fibre lasers" has however now provided a truly robust and reliable industrial 'tool'.

Industry North Project: Understanding Technology (INPUT) - 6th July 2011

From arrows to rockets - the quest for the perfect weapon: A history of aerial weaponry and Cumbria's place in scientific and engineering history - 11th July 2011
This evening lecture, provided by the Solway Aviation Museum’s Managing Director, David Price, will explore the history of aerial weaponry and show us how Cumbria has led the way in military science and technology over the years. David will illustrate his talk with many items from the museum collection, including some real aerial weapons! This promises to be an explosive talk, and great fun for all.

Local primary and secondary schools will be taking part over two days, building rockets powered only by water and air! The equipment is provided by the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL), and with helpers from NNL and Sellafield. These informative activities teach pupils about the physics of air and water in a fun way.

The The 2011 Young Persons Speaking Competition in association with the Nuclear Institute’s Young Generation Network which is open to all participants regardless of membership status as long as they eligible to be members of the YGN (i.e. under 37).
Our World in 2050 - 15th July 2011
On July 15th, we will be holding Our World in 2050 at St Benedicts School and Engineering College, Whitehaven. This follows on from previous highly successful events held at Stainburn School and Science College, Workington. It is a one day off-timetable cross-curricula STEM enrichment activity focused on the topics of adaptation to climate change and sustainability, and supported by a number of young IMechE mentors. For Year 8 students, it aims to engage them in thinking about engineering careers at a relatively early age in their educational development and thereby attract wider participation in STEM subjects.

Former Land Speed Record Holder, Richard Noble OBE is our guest speaker, supported by IMechE President Rod Smith and IMechE President-elect Isobel Pollock. Exploiting the use of late transition metals in selective carbon-hydrogen bond activation: mild synthetic transformations, catalyst scavenging, recycling and bioapplications - 13th October 2011
The lecture will describe the employment of transition metals such as palladium, platinum, copper, silver and gold in catalysing the formation of carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds by activation of carbon-hydrogen bonds, which are emerging as important new reactions for synthetic chemists.
Enigma - 9th November 2011
If you have never seen an Enigma machine one will be on display at this talk. The presentation will discuss how Enigma enciphered messages, and trace the history of the Enigma machine, showing how Polish, French and British code-breakers successively tackled this German technology, and how the battle of wits between code-users and such code-breakers as Alan Turing at Bletchley Park developed throughout the war – with some surprising and illuminating sidelights on such devices as the ‘Bombe’ and ‘Colossus’.

NuGen is now preparing detailed plans for developing their nuclear new build site, which will be submitted for consideration by the relevant planning authorities with the aim of a final investment decision being taken around 2015 with an expectation that any new power station would be commissioned around 2023. The event is to update the attendees on the progress made to date.
