Solar Energy

There is, at present, no solar fuels industry anywhere in the world despite the well-publicised needs to replace our depleting stock of fossil fuels with renewable energy sources.

Fiona Hammond is to present her perspectives of using contracts to enable successful delivery of high risk complex projects. Drawing on her experiences at Heathrow Express, Terminal 5, and the NDA and onto Derwent Forest, Fiona will illustrate how contracts need to be holistically considered enable high performing teams to deliver successful outcomes.

Dr Robin Catchpole, recently retired as Senior Astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, currently works at the Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge, and has been an astronomer all his life. Robin will present a fascinating lecture on the threats to earth from Asteroids and Comets.

Developing a reprocessing contingency for Magnox fuel

The end of generation from the Magnox nuclear power stations is rapidly approaching and the conclusions of associated reprocessing of the spent fuel at Sellafield will follow. However; the Magnox reprocessing plants at Sellafield are ageing and there was a concern that an acute failure would potentially prolonged storage of spent fuel in ponds, resulting in fuel degradation with its attendant consequences.
